Named after a signatory of the 1916 Rising - was originally Gregg Lane but was renamed Cathal Brugha Street when it was redeveloped during the reconstruction of O'Connell Street in the 1920's. Cathal Brugha (1874 - 1922) was a leading republican and was crippled in the rising of 1916. He presided over the first meeting of Dáil Éireann at the Mansion House in 1919 and became the first Minister for Defence.
